Helvetica Tonight
Posted by: Lisa (Employee)  1/6/2009  11:37
If you're like me and still haven't caught the documentary about our most favorite font ever, Helvetica (but went all the way to New York City to see the Helvetica exhibit at MoMA), here is your chance! You won't even have to leave the comfort of your home because your local PBS station will be showing it on your teevee tonight. For those of you in the LA area, it's on at 10pm on KCET.

Check your local listings here.

While we're on the subject of fonts (or typefaces, the technically correct term), this came in today's Daily Candy. A new eco-friendly font thought up by some ingenious Dutchies, made up of dots. It uses 20% less ink, which is a good thing because it means less printer cartridges that ends up in the trash. Download and use it for free here.

Travis Millard has been slowly chipping away at the underground comics/drawing great pictures of great things scene for the past decade or so. No doubt you've seen his work in some form or another (print, product, scribbled on a bus) and not even known it was him. Well, take this moment to introduce yourself with his world of art, zines, comics, books, stickers and everything in between.

It will be well worth it.

Check out this fantastic photoshoot for Vogue Korea. Looks like something straight outta a Bjork video.
Jen Stark

The things rising art star Jen Stark does with paper will make you feel things. Good things, hopefully, but definitely things. It's nice when someone can do that with just colored paper. Check the video here to see what it took to get her there.
Dress Like Your Very Own ME!!!

Dear Daily Update!!!!

So like this super famous blog, Hipster Runoff was like all complaining that we never send them ads with boobies in them, so we decided to send them one with my boobies. In the Micro- Mesh T-Shirt. Now everyone can dress like me and show off their boobies at the same time!!!

Luv Ya, Mean It.

Amazing Baby's Psych Pop jambo on Viva Radio sure was a stellar to do. Listen, podcast, share with your friends. And on a similar radio- related note, check out this mega cache of DC and DC-related hardcore classics: Dissonance.

Two for one post!

Looking for something to have a mellow listening party to before you get all crazy and New Years-afied and put on Technotronic? Check out Brooklyn's own Here We Go Magic. Nice stuff that reminds us of being happy when it's hard to be happy.

Their self-titled debut with Western Vinyl drops in February (2009, fool!).

If you weren't already spending hours looking at everyone else's good taste on fffound you should start here and move onward from there.
Year end

So many year end lists, so little time on the computer? Coolhunting's top five buildings of 2008 is pretty killer. Don't you wish you made buildings?
Aurel Schmidt

Aurel Schmidt certainly a fantastic talent. She draws the kind of pictures that make us happy with both concept and content and are just downright amazing to look at for hours. Take a gander at her work on Tiny Vices and if you agree that it rules you should consider grabbing her new limited edition poster of her "Supernatural" piece which is 72 inches tall and meant to fit a space the size of a door. Crazy.
The Sartorialist at NY7

The Sartorialist is a blog I check religiously so I was pretty, ok, very excited to learn that Scott Schuman, better known just as the Sartorialist, stopped into the Flatiron store a few days ago to shop for a fashion shoot with his assistant. Word is that he was very polite and not at all camera shy..

Of course we love LA. But we've been loving it more and more today after digging though the portfolio of Raoul Gatepin who now lives in NY and who happens to have one of the best photo bio's we've ever read:

1978 : born in Trappes. 2004 : buy a camera in Kathmandu. 2005 : move to Los Angeles. 2007 : move to Brooklyn.
Jim Stoten is bad ass

It's true, Jim Stoten is bad ass. I mean, I don't know him or anything, but judging by his work he has totally thrown down the gauntlet of life and is ready to drink blood from the severed heads of the nonbelievers.

Our suggestion is to get on his team before it's too late.
Tippi !

Given the prevalence of mega-popular teen blog stars on the internet these days why not give a little look at how the other half lives. The other half in this case being a little girl named Tippi Degre whose parents abandoned their lives as freelance French photographers in the '90's, moved to Africa, had a daughter and raised her in the bush. Now 17 and living back in France, little is known of what Tippi does with her time, but these videos of her youth are pretty special for sure. When was the last time you hugged a leopard?
USA for Affluence

The economy's tanked, we're in the midst of a global recession, and things are looking pretty grim. Especially for Rich People. What are they to do? In this new episode of BEARDO, Tim Harrington from Les Savy Fav rallies together his famous friends like Vice founder Gavin, Moby, Ian Svenonius from the Make-Up, Fred Armisen, and Andrew W.K. for a feel good song that raises awareness for the plight of rich people feeling the pain of a lighter pocketbook.

Watch it to the end cause Tim, in true Les Savy Fav fashion, strips down to his undies and gold Thigh Highs and leads the choir in an uplifting finale. Let's take this to number one on the charts this holiday season!

Thank you to Mac for sharing this.

Dear Daily Update,

So I was doing my job, being a good spokesmodel, minding everyone's business when I was checking up on my Daddy's Haight Street Store in San Francisco and to my surprise I spotted a very familiar Reality Star, tending the dressing rooms: MARJORIE, the 4th runner up from last season's America's Next Top Model!!!!!!!

So coool!!!!! She was a real sweetie! I wanted to gossip with her about how mean Tyra is and tell how how i was stuck in her hateful green room for 10 hours and about how she broke up my boy band...but since I'm not one to gossip, i figure I would let it go!!!! T.T.Y.L-MARJORIE T.T.Y.N.-TYRA!!!

xoxo

If you are going to find your way into some joker's I-love-thrifting-and-have-a- scanner-and-too-much-time-on-my-hands flickr set today, it might as well be this one. Hours of graphic inspiration.

Eff you Penguin!

Okay but for real there's not much time left in 2008. Might as well get all your misguided hatred out at once. I mean, who hasn't wanted to punch a cute baby penguin at one point or another --
